The music world of southern Africa was shaken to its foundations once again by the brutal murder of Mozambiquan bass player Gito Baloi in the early hours of Sunday April 4 2004. Returning from a concert in Pretoria, he was shot dead in his adopted city of Johannesburg by two unknown assailants; just one more victim of South Africa’s violent crime that claims the lives of some 20,000 people each year. This is the second killing of an established musician in the Gauteng capital in 2004: February saw the shooting of Tebogo Madingoane, leader of the Mafikizolo band, in a road-rage altercation in Soweto.
